Harvard Cheer
The Harvard Cheerleading Squad is a group of men and women dedicated to promoting school spirit, specifically through support of the College's athletic teams. Harvard Cheerleading has its roots in the mid-nineteenth century and boasts such alumni as Franklin D. Roosevelt (1904) and Homer Peabody (1941).
Cheerleading is considered a club sport and consists of 16-20 members. The squad cheers at all football games (home and away) as well as home games for the men's and women's basketball teams. In addition to eliciting enthusiasm from the crowd, the cheerleaders are dedicated to improving and perfecting their sport and continue to do so through participation in local and national competitions. The 2008-2009 Cheerleading team made its national debut at the 2009 NCA College Cheerleading National Championsihps in Daytona Beach, FL and we plan on returning in 2010 and improving upon our 7th place finish. In order to make this trip every year however, we will need the continued support of friends, family, alumni and administrators to make this goal a reality! The squad conditions year-round as their season is among the longest of any single sport at the College, extending from the first week in September through mid-April. The squad practices two evenings a week and team members also attend an optional tumbling class once a week and one mandatory strength training session. In addition to mandatory practices, the team maintains a workout schedule of their own to increase their own strength and flexibility.
The squad has placed particular importance on finding new ways to increase crowd participation at sporting events. We can be seen performing alongside the band in the Friends and Family tailgate before football games, and we can be found selling game face tattoos and other spirit items and interacting with fans all the way up to game time. During the games, you can see us performing during time outs and game breaks, and don't miss all the pushups we do when the Crimson score touchdowns!
